The evening before May Day, known as Walpurgis Night, was often marked by a heavy police presence and escalating violence. These conflicts frequently erupted in Mauerpark in particular.

To counter this dynamic with something constructive, the initiative “Love Your Enemies” was formed. Its goal: to send a strong message for nonviolent encounters, eye-level communication, and mutual respect through a culturally inspired, peaceful event.

From this movement, the Peaceful Walpurgis Night emerged, which has since taken place annually on April 30th in Mauerpark. The event’s program is colorful, diverse, and intentionally low-threshold. From late afternoon into the night, Mauerpark transforms into an open stage for music, performance, art, and participatory activities. Street musicians, fire artists, bubble performers, acrobats, and local collectives shape this celebration, which is intentionally geared toward all age groups.

The focus is not on consumption, but on shared experience and co-creation. There is no central stage or professional infrastructure – the event thrives on improvisation, commitment, and community spirit.

The Peaceful Walpurgis Night has always been organized in a decentralized and voluntary manner. Individuals, local residents, musicians, social and cultural initiatives, and volunteer helpers work together as equals – without commercial interests or hierarchical structures. Everyone contributes what they can and want – be it music, technical skills, coordination, or hands-on or creative support.

This sense of personal responsibility and self-organization is a core element of the concept. The event is supported by Kulturgemeinschaft Mauerpark, the Pankow District Office, Grün Berlin, and civil society partners – but the true driving force is the dedication of the many volunteers involved.

Together, they ensure that Walpurgis Night becomes a place of encounter – peaceful, creative, and full of solidarity.

More info about Walpurgis Night

The Peaceful Walpurgis Night in Mauerpark originated in the mid-2000s as a creative response to growing tensions and outbreaks of violence that regularly occurred around May 1st in Berlin.
